Brown patches, sun spots and melasma are among the most common skin concerns we see in Calgary — driven by intense prairie sun, high altitude and, for melasma, hormones. The frustrating part is that not all pigmentation is the same, and the wrong treatment can make some types worse. This guide explains the difference and the options.
The main types of pigmentation
- Sun spots / age spots (lentigines): flat brown spots from UV exposure, common on the face, hands and chest. These respond well to IPL and certain lasers.
- Freckles: genetic, darkening with sun. Often lightened with IPL.
- Melasma: larger, blotchy brown/grey patches, often on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip, linked to hormones (pregnancy, the pill) and heat. Melasma is stubborn and can rebound — aggressive heat-based treatments can worsen it.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): marks left after acne or injury, more common in deeper skin tones.
Treatment options
- IPL photofacial: excellent for sun spots and freckles on lighter skin; see our IPL guide. Not first-line for melasma.
- Chemical peels: gentle, controlled exfoliation that fades surface pigment and can suit melasma when done conservatively — see our chemical peels guide.
- Microneedling: helps PIH and texture and can be paired with brightening serums; see our microneedling guide.
- Topicals & daily SPF: the foundation of every pigmentation plan — without sun protection, results will not last.
Why melasma needs special care
Melasma is triggered by heat and light as well as UV, so treatments that overheat the skin can backfire. The best approach is usually a conservative, layered plan — sun protection, gentle brightening, and carefully chosen in-clinic treatments — managed by someone who understands the condition. Beware any clinic promising to "blast it away" in one session.
Calgary’s sun is the real culprit
At our elevation, UV is stronger than many people realize, and it both causes and worsens pigmentation. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (reapplied) is non-negotiable, year-round — yes, even in winter with snow glare.
