"How many sessions will I need?" is the question we hear most at our NE Calgary studio — and the honest answer is most people need six to eight sessions, sometimes with occasional maintenance afterward. But the real story is more interesting, and understanding it will save you money and disappointment. Here is exactly why laser works in stages, what determines your personal number, and how to get the most out of every visit.
Why one session is never enough
Your hair grows in three phases: active growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and resting (telogen). Laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and only effectively destroys the follicle during the active growth phase. At any given moment, only about 20–30% of the hair in an area is in that phase — so a single treatment can only ever address a portion of the hair. Repeat sessions, spaced correctly, catch the rest as they cycle into growth.
The typical course: 6–8 sessions
For most clients, six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart (slightly longer for the body) produces a dramatic, lasting reduction. You will usually notice patches of regrowth coming in finer and sparser after just two or three sessions — that is the laser working through the growth cycles.
What changes your personal number
- Hair colour and coarseness. Dark, coarse hair absorbs laser energy best and clears fastest. Fine or light hair can need more sessions.
- Treatment area. Faces (especially hormone-driven areas like the chin) often need more sessions and maintenance than legs or underarms.
- Skin tone. Deeper skin tones are treated safely with specific wavelengths and conservative settings, which can mean a few extra sessions to reach the same result.
- Hormones. PCOS, pregnancy and certain medications stimulate hair growth and may call for ongoing maintenance.
- Consistency. Skipping sessions or stretching them too far apart lets growth cycles slip out of sync and can extend your course.
Spacing matters more than people think
Coming in too early wastes a session on follicles that are not in the treatable phase; waiting too long lets treated hair fall out and new hair appear without being caught at the right time. Following your technician's recommended interval — generally 4–6 weeks for the face and 6–8 weeks for the body — is the single biggest thing within your control.
Maintenance after your course
After a full course most people enjoy long stretches with little to no regrowth. Hormonal areas may benefit from a maintenance session once or twice a year. This is normal and does not mean the original course "failed" — it reflects how your body keeps producing some new follicles over time.
Getting the most from every session
- Shave (do not wax or pluck) the area the day before — the laser needs the root intact below the surface.
- Avoid sun and self-tanner before and after; tanned skin limits safe settings.
- Keep your schedule consistent.
- Tell your technician about any new medications.
